Connection logic at a glance
| Point | Threadless | Internally threaded |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | A pin on the decorative end fits into a hollow post and is retained by controlled tension. | A threaded stem on the removable end screws into a matching internal thread in the post. |
| Wearable post | Smooth; no screw thread on the section passing through the piercing. | Smooth; the thread is inside the post. |
| Critical dimensions | Post gauge, pin diameter, pin length, bend or retention design, end orientation. | Post gauge, internal thread pattern, stem length, thread fit, end orientation. |
| Compatibility risk | “Threadless” does not guarantee cross-brand fit or equal retention. | “Internally threaded” does not guarantee the same thread pattern or fit. |
Keep connection and jewelry structure separate
A connection system describes how components join. A jewelry structure describes the form of the finished piece. A flat-back labret may use a threadless or internally threaded end; a hinged clicker uses a hinge and closure rather than a removable end and post.
A straight post with a flat disc on one end and a removable decorative end on the other.
A straight post with an end at each side; one or both may be removable depending on construction.
A curved post with ends at both sides; dimensions and curve affect fit.
A ring with a hinged segment that closes into the ring body; hinge and closure quality matter.
A ring completed by a removable or hinged segment, depending on design.
A circular barbell with an open center and removable ends.
The compatibility check studios need
- Identify the system family: threadless, internally threaded, externally threaded, clicker, segment, or another proprietary structure.
- Match the post or ring gauge.
- Match the pin or thread design using the supplier’s stated specification—not appearance alone.
- Confirm wearable length or inner diameter.
- Confirm end diameter, setting height, orientation, and intended placement.
- Test fit using the business’s approved inspection process before mixing components.
Visual similarity is not proof of compatibility. A component that starts to engage but binds, wobbles, or sits with a gap should be treated as incompatible until the specification is confirmed.
